The Plastic Bank is a Canadian social enterprise that facilitates the collection of 1 million kilograms of ocean-bound plastic every month, all while improving the livelihoods of over 100,000 members of our coastal communities. How does it work? Through a network of volunteers and employees around the world, the Plastic Bank puts a price on something we all use, abuse and throw away — plastic. Plastic Bank employs members of our coastal communities to collect throwaway plastic from sensitive waterways which can then be exchanged for credit toward social services, like education and health care, at local plastic depots. This plastic is then recycled into new materials, further extending its value.
