As we head into September, it's easy to get stressed out. But as you know, stress can be a major trigger for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
But between back to school lists, finances and work responsibilities, where do you start?
Here are five quick and easy ways to stress a little less:
1. Put the phone down
For various reasons, the endless scroll can be even more appealing when we're stressed and tired, even if we know it's not good for us. Rest is the easiest and best possible medicine for a stressed out system. To help calm and rest your mind, try limiting screen time, especially at night. (Settings on your phone that limit screen time on your most tempting apps work great). That way, you're not disrupting your sleep by overwhelming your system with too much information, harmful blue light and distractions associated with your phone.
2. Move yourself
Our bodies were designed to move. Sadly, our daily activities are increasingly sedentary. The good news is, exercise, even just a short walk, helps increase blood flow and healthy activity in the brain, and combat mental health challenges like stress. So even if you only have a few minutes, get outside and move.
3. Exhale
As humans, we have another stress-busting superpower available to us: mindful breathing. That's because our breath has the power to affect our nervous system. As you may have noticed, our breath can get faster when we're under stress. Our breath can also slow down when we're relaxed. By mindfully slowing our breathing, we can help soothe our system. Here's a powerful and simple breathing technique to help get you started.
4. Find your quiet
Let's be honest, very few of us have a calming meditation space available to "chill out." But we don't need a soothing space to find inner quiet. So how can we find it? Set aside a few minutes to step away from distractions — be it the phone or kids — close your eyes, and try to be present. When you think about it, worry, no matter what it is we're worried about, always involves one of two things: the past or the future. But in this moment— right now — everything is OK.
5. Smile
Believe it or not, smiling, even if it's a little fake at first, helps trick your brain into releasing stress-busting neurotransmitters regardless of how you really feel inside. This superpower to ignite joy in your heart and mind at will is really handy in those moments where you feel overwhelmed.
Every single one of these simply tricks can help you find calm, even if just for a moment. You and your family's skin will thank you for it. Ready to stress-less? Soothe stressed-out skin with Satya Organic.
